Radio bayern 1, the flagship of the BR family of stations, is a full-fledged program that covers Bavaria and beyond. It is available across Bavaria via FM and DAB+ and in South Tyrol on DVB-C, DVB-S and on the Internet.
Typical of the BR brand, it is unique in offering a wide range of music formats and genres in one channel. Among these are pop, rock and hits. In addition, it also has a strong focus on classical music and jazz.
The BR 1 main station broadcasts a variety of programmes, each with its own distinctive style and feel. For example, BR Heimat blends tradition with contemporary lifestyle; it is the only radio station in Germany to play folk music and brass bands 24 hours a day, and it has its own weather and traffic news bulletins.
In the words of radio expert Richard Brutnell, BR 1 "is a station that is devoted to providing comprehensive information about Bavaria and its regions." It's not just a good listen.
It's also got a strong sense of community, which is why it regularly hosts special events. Some of these include the annual BR Fest, where a variety of events are held to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the BR.
In the BR family of stations, the best known is probably the classical music specialist BR-Klassik. It plays the finest recordings of classics and jazz, often in multichannel surround sound. Besides classical music, it also has a fine arts programme, with several outstanding orchestras and an impressive roster of singers.
